Bloodshot (feat. Jordan Summers)

about

Named for the battle stimulant that Odd favors and both he and Dylan find in the bowels of the pharmaceutical ship, “Bloodshot” is the quintessential Odd/Dylan team-up battle track for the album. Featuring both Odd and Dylan’s themes, “Bloodshot” also features my good friend Jordan Summers offering his mad skills on the electric guitar. When I
asked Jordan to record electric guitar for this track, “Bloodshot” already had some electric guitar virtual instrumentation done by me, but I really wanted this track to sound more authentic, since electric guitar and rock/metal as a genre in general were so important to both Dylan and Odd’s characters. I knew Jordan’s tracks would sound fantastic, since he’s a great guitar player, but I don’t think I was ready for just how well everything blended together and how it ended up sounding exactly as I had pictured in my head (probably even better than that, honestly).

The track is based off the battle with the pirates on the SNS Kranack, specifically how Odd and Dylan sneak through some tunnels in the ship and ambush the pirates who are holding some medical personnel hostage. It was an awesome and intense scene, and I tried to capture those feelings, as well as the bond between Odd and Dylan and the heroic nature of their rescue. All of the character themes here are played as electric guitar solos—first up, Dylan, in the beginning section of the track. After the quieter, tension building interlude, we come back with drums, strings, and brass, and then Odd’s theme. Then we bookend the whole thing with Dylan’s theme again. Starting with Dylan’s
theme was primarily done because, well, she’s the melee fighter, so she’s gonna rush forward while Odd stays a step behind with his laser rifle. Both of the themes came from the choruses of lyrical songs I wrote for the characters back before this album was even an idea in my mind. One of these days I’ll get around to recording those, but since
I have to do vocals for that, it’s a bit more of an undertaking.
