Captain Chloe Lasmos

about

Though one of the least complex tracks on the album, I really enjoyed the dynamism of the loops and instrumentation I was able to use on “Captain Chloe Lasmos” to get across thematically, exactly what I wanted from my presentation of the character. Captain Chloe Lasmos, of course, is the captain of the pharmaceutical vessel SNS Kranack, the one that the crew of Void’s Grace saved in the first and second episode of Elysian Road. I won’t go into spoilers here about her character later in the show, but suffice it to say she ends up being very important to the overall story, and thus, I thought, deserving of her own theme and track.

Musically, this is the most electronic-sounding track, I believe, on the whole album (barring of course, the bonus track “The Order of the Dust”). I started with a simple electronic loop that came with separable layers, and then slowly built them, then took them away throughout the track to create a bit of a back and forth which made the underscore for
the other instruments to play the main themes. The main theme is played on an electronically modified piano/organ combination instrument, repeated ad nauseum throughout the track. Chloe is a character that always seems stuck in the life she’s built for herself (or had built for her, depending on who you ask) and I loved the way the constant repetition of the piano and the electronic looping lent itself to that aspect of her character.

While this track is not meant as a play-by-play score of a particular scene from Elysian Road, as some of the tracks are, the music in this track would certainly be played at various points during episode two, three, and fifteen of the imaginary TV show version of Elysian Road, and this track is the first of what John Williams tends to call “concert pieces” though obviously that term is more esoteric when used in this instance. “Captain Chloe Lasmos” is the presentation of a particular character theme and all its varieties, in a way that’s meant for presentation on an album of music such as this rather than a direct-to-screen score of a particular scene.

One last thing to note about the track: I meant for Captain Chloe Lasmos to function as sort of a nega- or bizzarro-Tyl in the Elysian Road universe. That’s why, besides the piano, you have a solo horn and female vocals as main instruments, similar to how Tyl in “Void’s Angels” is presented with similar instrumentation. Why Chloe functions as a sort of reverse Tyl in the story has really yet to be fully explored, but when we finally get back to season two of Elysian Road, all will surely be revealed on that front.
