Repent and Believe

from Elysian Road by Caleb M. Powers

/

about

The most piano-heavy track, this piece is a presentation of Dylan’s Theme as soft intro-spection. Mainly meant to be a loose score for the variety of scenes that Dylan spends reading through the Bible in Elysian Road, after she nearly kills a man in the first episode of the show and spends a lot of time afterward torn up by guilt. Dylan, throughout the
show, goes through a very slow transformation in her outlook and the things she believes, and this track is sort of at the center of that narrative arc that shapes the first season of Elysian Road.

We begin with Dylan’s B theme, the melody of the verse of the lyrical song I wrote for her character, before slowly making our way to the A theme, presented first in a very mellow fashion, then quite a dramatic one. All throughout we have the electronic instrument that signifies the planet Xanlis whenever it shows up in the narrative. Xanlis, of course, is the wasteland planet Dylan originally hails from, and so on most of the tracks with Dylan’s theme the instrument shows up prominently. Since it’s in episode seven of the show that the crew decides to make their way to Xanlis, I thought this would be a fine time to subtly introduce the planet musically.
