The Imperium's Arrival

about

The longest track of the bunch, coming in at a whopping seven minutes and thirty seconds, “The Imperium’s Arrival” was both an exhilarating and exhausting track to produce. Like “Battle of the Mind”, it is a play-by-play score of a particular sequence in the story, and quite a long sequence at that—lasting about fifty-five minutes in game-time. Featuring several themes, including the Thousand Island Imperium’s theme, Zeva’s theme, Dylan’s theme, a variation on Odd’s theme, and of course, the Void’s Grace theme, the track was a massive undertaking to pull off, but I’m really satisfied with the way it turned out. More than any of the other tracks, this one feels like it could be in the soundtrack of an actual show and not seem out of place.

The breakdown of this track goes like this: First, an Imperium officer in space, the one that’s been tracking the crew for some time now (an Arabic man by the name of Rashid al-Saad), confers with his men. They set a course for Xanlis’ surface to capture the crew of Void’s Grace to get answers as to the stolen Hephaestus Engine (a powerful device they had previously been tasked with brokering a deal to give to the Imperium, but had since reneged). The oud in the soundtrack if Rashid’s theme, and only appears briefly in the grand scheme of Elysian Road. The Imperium arrives on planet, and then we cut to Zeva, who sees their soldiers march towards Void’s Grace, looking dangerous. She alerts Odd, and we switch to “gear-up montage” where Odd sets up some traps for the soldiers (stun grenades with proximity triggers) while getting into position to protect the ship should they break in. A tense moment as Rashid orders the door welded into, and then they indeed break in before we cut away to Dylan. She is riding her bike back from her old home, having gathered up some of her old possessions, awfully contemplative, and so we get a variation of her theme as we ride back with her. She gets to the gate and realizes the Imperium are headed to the dome as well. She gets ready to fight, and then rushes out to confront the soldiers. Lasers go off and Dylan’s sword is swung. We cut back to Odd as he waits in ambush. The Imperium soldiers make their way inside and the stun grenades go off (represented by brass stings) before Odd and the soldiers get into a legit firefight.

We cut back and forth between Odd and Dylan’s respective battles—first they are going well, but things get more and more tense until finally Dylan is shot multiple times and seems to be headed towards certain death. An ominous version of the Void’s Grace theme plays (the melody is played over the top of the chords normally used for the Imperium theme) as we realize the dire straits the characters are in. End track.
