The Order of the Dust (Bonus Track)

from Elysian Road by Caleb M. Powers

about

I had always planned to write this one, and have it be a bonus track intentionally, primarily because Elysian Road did end up having one “bonus episode” where the players had different characters in a different part of the sector whose story was only peripherally connected with the main narrative of the show. They were a group of mercenaries from the titular Order of the Dust trying to steal an important relic from a highly secure facility, and it ended up being a great session, and a fun bonus episode to tag on to Elysian Road. I’d always had a particular idea about what this track would sound like...at least until I sat down to actually write it.

I had just finished “The Imperium’s Arrival” and was feeling incredibly burn-out on this project. I had composed more than seven minutes of music and felt pretty creatively dry when it came to moving forward and finishing the rest of the album. But I knew I had to keep going, so I decided to give myself a bit of a creative recharge by doing something out-of-the-box...something wacky. That’s how this piece was born. I was messing around with some of the weirder virtual instruments I had available in my library, and came across a particular toolbox that had some distorted orchestral instruments—so distorted, that they sounded almost nothing like their original parents. I gave myself the creative limitation of only being able to use instruments from that toolbox, and went ahead and started jamming. After the intense orchestral composition that was track thirteen, this was a much needed break into the weird to recharge myself a bit and find that I did in fact still enjoy making music, despite the way I was feeling burned out.

I tried to get across the “gritty mercenary” vibe that the original characters had and was pleasantly surprised to find just how well this track worked, even despite its odd nature. A few of my alpha listeners even said that this was one of their favorite tracks!
