With The Void Ahead (Bonus Track)

from Elysian Road by Caleb M. Powers

about

This track was the original incarnation of “Evelyn and the Fiascos” and while I still very much enjoy it as an orchestral piece and enjoy listening to it, I can definitely see now that my brother Connor (player of Evelyn Lydner) was right when he said that it didn’t fit her character or the album quite right. For one, it’s too cheesy, too over-the-top, and Evelyn, though certainly an awkward person, doesn’t quite fit that aesthetic. She’s dead serious about the things she says, and while she does spend some of Elysian Road trying to discover what love is, she hasn’t found it yet, and the romanticism in this track is just a bit much, taking those things into consideration. Another thing to note is that the choir that features in this track is certainly out of place with the feel of the rest of the album—nowhere else does a choir feature, not even in other places where Evelyn’s theme enters. Besides that, this isn’t the theme of Evelyn’s we’re familiar with (it’s technically Evelyn’s C theme, part of the bridge of the lyrical song I wrote for her a while back), and so it doesn’t really have any of the emotional weight it should have. Bringing back the wonky piano for track fourteen was a great decision, and rewriting the whole thing definitely made the album stronger, in my opinion, but it left me with an extra track!

Unlike the other bonus track, “With The Void Ahead” was not intentional. It’s a B-Side, a track that didn’t quite make it into the original concept and had to be discarded. But, since it doesn’t make any sense to me to discard a perfectly good piece of music when it can be repurposed as a bonus track, it’s here ready to be enjoyed! If you want any more context as to the scene this track was originally supposed to have scored, check out track fourteen’s blurb. Feel free to compare the two and make up your own mind as to which fits Evelyn and the album better!
